What is cloud storage? Needless to say that not many people are still familiar with the term 'cloud storage' despite when it's so much in the vogue, with companies offering tailor-made cloud solutions, holding and participating in big data security events, and running several campaigns among other things. Microsoft and Google are some of the biggies whose continuous offerings, media engagements and campaigns have given boost to the usage of the term 'clod storage'.
I felt intrigued by the fact that how much people are actually drifted off from storage despite that they are taking its benefits in some form like email (only with some providers like Hotmail or Google etc.) and/or data backup solutions. Yes, this is true that people have already begun to using this but they just don't know that it is known by the weird name 'Cloud Storage'. Even I've often faced with the problem of explaining the term to many of readers.
If the facts are to be believed, then only 16% of the population can explain about cloud. Even this percentage has had mixed reviews about this storage. Anyways, I would say it's not a big deal if people don't know about this storage. In fact, not knowing about this is not a taboo like not knowing about the current U.S. president's name.
Let's cut the chase now. Cloud is nothing but just another name of online storage, which is a contemporary method for storing your files online. Just like customers store or rather back up their data on to hard drives, CDs, thumb drives, or other USB drives to prevent it from being lost, in the same fashion they can store it in a cloud server to protect it from being lost.
Let me clarify it this way again. Like external devices viz. hard drives, thumb drives and CDs which are used by customers to protect their data from being lost due to catastrophic or man-made contingencies, storage in the same way offers a data backup and restore solution but with a difference to them. Thus storage is one of the many data backup and restore solutions available to customers today.
If you notice then I said cloud offers data backup and restore solution 'with a difference'. What's that difference actually? The biggest difference between cloud and local storage (external devices) is that the former saves your data on a cloud server (network) connected to the Internet while the later stores your data on the hard drives, CDs, and USB drives among other removable media.
There is a problem with local storage media. Just like your computer, car, credit card or any other house item remain exposed to the real environment and the surroundings in which it can be lost or get damaged due to accidental damage, thefts, and floods among other catastrophic damages, external storage media also remains exposed to the same environment and surroundings and thus the data stored on it remains at great risk of being damaged or stolen and misused.
Unlike external storage media, cloud keeps your data in the cloud server as described above. Any time you want to access your data, back up more data, restore it, or update any changes, you simply have to log in to your online account either on your computer or your Smartphone connected to the Internet and that's it. You can access, edit, re-edit, back up more, restore, and sync your data as many times as you want.
Check the difference. You cannot do the same with external storage media. Think of this scenario when there is a need for backing up your data regularly. With external storage media, you will have to attach the device first to your computer and then start backing up your data. Plug it out and keep it aside once you are done. Now think that you have added or deleted some files or programs from your computer and now you want to update your data stored on the external drive or media. To back up or sync changes, you will have to plug the device again and start all over.
However with a cloud solution, you won't have to go through this pain. You will simply open your web browser, log in to your account and that's it. You can start backing up your data, re-editing, deleting, adding, and sharing it as many times as you want to. This kind of flexibility and convenience is not available in external storage devices.
With a cloud solution, you can instantly share files, videos, photos, songs and your other personal collection including large ones with your friends and relatives living in different parts of the world. Now think yourself, can you do the same with external storage devices? No you cannot do that. To be able to share your data with your friends and relatives in different countries, you will have to ship physical copies of your external storage devices bearing postal charges, hassles, and most precious thing is the 'time'.
Cloud helps you make most of your Smartphone. Yes, you can access or back up your data using your Smartphone. However, external storage media doesn't give you any such option. Apart from these benefits, it offers lots of cool and advanced features that will always remain absent from the local storage devices. It saves you all what is taken away by the local storage media. Cloud are time- and money-savers. Most importantly they save you from hassles and irritations. I hope now that 'cloud storage', a.k.a online data backup is not an alien term to you.
